The joint swearing-in ceremony for new members of the Academic Corps and the honouring of Professors Emeritus, Honorary and Retired Professors was held on Tuesday 3 December 2019 at the Salle académique of the University of Liège.

R

ector Pierre Wolper welcomed the new Associate Professors and the Emeritus, Honorary and Retired Professors with a metaphor of the crew and the boat.

"Some of them board, others get off a boat that has been sailing for more than two hundred years. The ship is not always easy to maneuver but its crew is of high quality. It is driven by a team spirit and a shared vision."

With regard to this vision, the Rector recalled the motto he proposed for ULiège at the last Academic Ceremony, SCIENTIA OPTIMUM (excellence through science, through knowledge), and the University's five values: freedom, integrity, humanity, boldness and responsibility.

Vision and values constituting the basis of a dual commitment symbolized by the swearing-in of new Associate Professors: for individuals, to develop their scientific excellence that contributes to the common weal; for the Institution, to trust and support individuals throughout their careers.
