Welcome to Liège
Some important points of your stay
Sickness: Affiliation with a mutual insurance company of your choice
In Belgium, individual health insurance is compulsory. This means that all students must join a mutual insurance company of their choice.
If you come from an EU country (EU + Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), you are insured by your own national system, which gives you a (temporary) European Health Insurance Card, which covers you in case of illness abroad.
Please note: registration with a mutual insurance company is still recommended!
In this case, you will be reimbursed for a large part of the medical costs incurred in Belgium (visits to the doctor, medication, etc.). In general, contributions vary between €7 and €10 per month, but some mutual insurance companies are free.
If you are from outside the EU, you will need to have insurance of the type taken out in your country of origin, or insurance taken out in Belgium.
Documents required for registration with a mutual insurance company in Belgium: health insurance card (if you have one) and a bank account number.
