Student from a European Union member state transferring his/her residence to Belgium (EU)

For students who wish to have their main residence in Belgium, an application for a registration certificate (Annex 19) must be submitted by the student to the municipal administration. He or She is immediately entered in the waiting list.

A check on actuel residence is then carried out. If the check is negative, the student is removed from the Wating Register. If the check is positive, the student is entered in the Foreigners' Register.

Which documents?

Go to the Immigration office of the local administration with the following documents:

  • valid passport or identity card
  • the University registration certificate (which can be downloaded from the student portal under the heading "My Documents")
  • health insurance covering the risk in Belgium
  • 2 recent passport size photos
  • proof of housing (certificate from the owner or copy of the lease).

    Cost : 15,00 EUR

Resident student or national of a bordering country (annex 33)

For cross-border students who are nationals or residents of a country bordering Belgium and who maintain their usual residence in their own country, there is no registration in the Registers and the municipal administration gives them an annex 33, provided that their file is complete.

Which documents?

Go to the Immigration office of the municipal administration with the following documents:

  • valid passport or identity card
  • the University registration certificate (which can be downloaded from the student portal under the heading "My Documents")
  • health insurance covering the risk in Belgium
  • 2 recent passport size photos
  • proof of housing (certificate from the owner or copy of the lease).

    Cost : 10,00 EUR

Non-EU student transferring his/her residence to Belgium

Either the student applies for residence at the competent Belgian diplomatic or consular post abroad. If the student's application for residence is accepted, he or she can travel to Belgium. They must then register with the local authorities.

Or the students submits the application from the local authority in Belgium. A residence check is carried out. If it is negative, the administration decides not to consider the application by means of an annex 40. If it is positive, the student receives a document attesting to the submission of the application, which is then sent to the "Office des Étrangers". If the Office grants the residence permit, the municipal administration proceeds with the registration of the student in th Foreigners' Register, or, if the foreigner already holds such a certificate, informs him/her of the decision.

Which documents?

Go to the "Service des Étrangers" of the municipal administration with the following documents:

  • valid passport with de D visa issued for Belgium
  • the University registration certificate (which can be downloaded from the student portal under the heading "My Documents")
  • the certificate of sponsorship
  • 2 recent passport size photos

End of studies

Students, European Union citizens and citizens of non-EU countries must be removed from the Register of Foreigners. To do so, they must notify the local administration of their departure.
