Practical advice and safety measures
In case of sickness on a week-end?
Turn to the local clinic
Open from Friday 7 pm to Monday 8 am and on public holiday (8pm to 8am).
Address: 25 Quai Van Beneden (50m from the Aquarium) +32 4 341 33 33
Do not hesitate to ask for the addresses of GPs near you when you arrive.
CO (carbon monoxide)
CO is a very dangerous gas called the silent killer. It cannot be smelled, seen, tasted or touched. To avoid CO intoxication, make sure you have sufficient air coming in and out of the room where you are using gas, oil or wood.
How can we identify CO intoxication?
- Headache, nausea, weariness
- Occasional fainting
What is to be done?
- Open all windows and doors
- Call 112
Fire
Smoke detectors are compulsory, check with your landlord.
If there is a fire in your building :
- Give all tenants warning and call the fire brigade at 100 or 112
- Leave the premises closing all doors and windows
- Do not use the lift
Thefts and aggression
Some safety measures:
- keep your handbag closed (particularly in "Le Carré")
- keep your wallet in an inside pocket
- have as little cash as possible with you
- leave your passport and ID at home and take copies or your student card
- have a good padlock on your bicycle and leave it in a well-lit area (even so, it might disappear). You can buy padlocks at the 'Maison des Cyclistes' near the Guillemin station
Most thieves work in team, so be particularly careful if someone unknown starts talking to you. Do not walk around on your own in the middle of the night.
Write down the identification numbers of your electronic equipment, so you can retrieve them if ever they are found.
Burglary
When you leave your room or flat for a weekend or holiday
- do not let everybody know (it is a bad idea to advertise it on Facebook, for instance)
- do not leave a note on your door
- tell trusted neighbours and ask them to collect your mail
- do not leave your keys under the doormat or a flowerpot
- close and if possible lock all windows and doors even for a short
If you have been burgled, immediately call the police (101 or 112).
A theft insurance may compensate for some of your financial loss but not restore the stolen items.
