As a public university open to the world and is anchored in the scientific, cultural and economic development of its region, the University of Liège relies on its three pillars: teaching, research and community service.
ULiège trains responsible citizens who are provided with cutting-edge knowledge and critical thinking, are able to share knowledge and can push forward an increasingly complex world.
ULiège develops and promotes excellence in research, multidisciplinary and direct engagement with its instruction.
Global exposure is a top priority at the University of Liège. The institution offers a wide range of international mobility opportunities to students, researchers and staff, enabling them to enhance their cross-disciplinary skills and language knowledge.
ULiège: an experience of daily living. Located in 3 cities and 4 campuses, the university is a key player in terms of the environment and mobility.
After a festive welcome day, the University of Liège launched Smart Start, a unique integration program for newfirst-year bachelor students.
After the welcome address, 1700 new students had the opportunity to discover various information stands devoted to university life and leisure activities, meet the student circles and the Student Federation (Fédé), and enjoy a variety of entertainment and the musical ambience provided by la radio 48FM.
The Campus Challenge, the highlight of the afternoon, brought together several hundred participants from the various Faculties. Using a map of the campus as a guide, they had to find their way around in teams and take part in a series of challenges without exceeding the allotted time. Strategy and cohesion were needed to lead their team to victory, as well as a certain resistance to the rain. At the finish line, wet clothes but above all smiles and new friendships.

The new academic year continued the next day with the first Smart Start day, attended by over 1,200 first-year undergraduates. Modelled on the New Student Orientation Programmes widely used in Anglo-Saxon countries, this new program at ULiège provides a springboard for newcomers, combining social, academic and logistical support from the moment they arrive on campus.
Welcome by students, practical workshops by the Student Affairs team, lectures by professors and convivial moments punctuated this day designed to give newcomers the essential reference points to get their university career off to a good start.
Smart Start continues tomorrow, Thursday September 11, with a second morning of activities, for which almost 1,000 participants are expected.
This initiative illustrates the university's commitment to developing pedagogical tools that encourage success and personal development right from the start of an academic career.
