Students from a country outside of the European Union must have sufficient resources to undertake studies in Belgium.

The obligation to provide a financing plan

The financing plan that you must provide to the University of Liège is intended to describe the nature, source, and significance of the resources that you are able to gather to carry out your studies.

This obligation is verified by both the Institution and the Immigration Office.

A minimum amount is set and indexed annually by royal decree. It is currently at € 789 net/month (academic year 2023-2024).

To obtain a student visa, you must prove that you have sufficient means of subsistence to cover, in Belgium, your stay, studies, healthcare and repatriation to your origin country.

789 EUR: is it enough to live a month in Belgium?

The student must be aware that the sum of 789 EUR/month is currently insufficient for them to manage financially during their study stay. It is therefore ESSENTIAL that the student has other means of financing; in particular, upon their arrival, for the payment of a housing deposit. It is essential to know the cost of one year in Belgium.

The University of Liège considers that the minimum cost of a year of studies is 10,000 EUR (+ registration fees), and requires a financing plan for this amount.
