Equivalence is a process aimed at assimilating studies carried out abroad with studies organized in educational establishments of the French Community.

Equivalence of secondary school leaving certificates

Equivalences between foreign secondary school leaving certificates and the Belgian Certificat d'Enseignement Secondaire Supérieur (C.E.S.S.) are examined by the Service des Équivalences de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles. This equivalence is required for enrolment in 1st cycle studies (bachelier).

Equivalence of 2nd cycle university diplomas

Equivalences to basic 2nd cycle diplomas are also the responsibility of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, Service des Equivalences de l'enseignement supérieur. Since January 2016, the procedure for requesting equivalence and the related fees have been revised.

This equivalence may be required to apply for a job in the civil service, but is not necessary to gain admission to a complementary master's or postgraduate degree at university.

Juries decide on the student's level of admission on the basis of his or her individual file, depending on the number of credits they can value him or her for his or her previous studies.

Equivalence of 3rd cycle university diplomas

Some Belgian scholarship organizations require applicants to hold a Belgian doctorate or equivalent degree.

For example, some applicants must apply for equivalence of their foreign doctoral degree fromUniversité.
