Access conditions to the Doctorate and registration form

The doctorate includes :

• the doctoral training, santioned by the research training certificate. No one may obtain the degree of doctor without having successfully completed a corresponding doctoral training programme.
• the work related to the preparation of a thesis and its defence of this thesis, sanctioned by the academic grade of doctor

Access to postgraduate studies is reserved for students who hold a Master's degree obtained after 5 years of study (300 credits/ECTS).

However, students who obtained a 4-year Master's degree before the "Bologna" decree came into force may also be admitted to a 3rd cycle.

The access conditions to postgraduate studies are governed by articles 115 and 116 of the decree of 7 November 2013 defining the higher education landscape and the academic organisation of studies.

Access to postgraduate studies (doctorate) is granted to holders of either:

• either an academic degree of Master in at least 120 credits
• or a similar academic degree awarded by a higher education institution, in the French Community or outside it, by virtue of a decision of the academic authorities and under the additional conditions that they set
• or a foreign academic degree recognised as equivalent to those mentioned in paragraphs 1 and 2 pursuant to the decree of 7 November 2013, a European directive, an international convention or other legislation, under the same conditions
• or a title, diploma, degree or certificate of second cycle, in the French Community or outside it, which does not give access to postgraduate studies by virtue of literas 1 to 3, but for which the totality of the successful studies can be valued by the jury for at least 300 credits
• or, by way of derogation, a title, diploma, degree or certificate awarded outside the French Community which, in that system of origin, gives direct access to doctoral training or studies and work relating to the preparation of a doctoral thesis, even if the studies attested by these titles or degrees are not organised in distinct cycles or in at least five years. This admission must be exceptional and duly justified on the basis, in particular, of formal and authentic proof of this capacity to pursue doctoral studies in the system of origin

► You have just obtained your Master's degree at ULiège?

• Direct re-registration via your myULiège portal
• To be expected: the scan of the duly completed authorisation from the Collège de Doctorat: form 2025-2026

► You were a student at ULiège the year before your application (all fields combined)?

• Direct re-registration via your myULiège portal
• Depending on your situation (degree giving direct access or not), you will be asked to provide the required documents

► You have a Belgian Master 120 credits but were not registered at ULiège the year before your application?

• Please check the access conditions and submit your application via the online form (link below)
• To be provided: the scan of the completed authorisation from the Doctoral College: form 2025-2026, as well as a scan of your identity document, your 1st and 2nd cycle diplomas and proof of your activities over the last five years.

When should I apply?

For the academic year 2025-2026, registrations for doctoral training and doctorate open from 23rd June 2025 and close on the working day preceding the opening date of registration 2026-2027 (end of June 2026), except for doctorates under the Faculty of Medicine for which the deadline is 15 May 2026.

What happens next?

►Activate your "myULiège" portal as a student

Once you have registered, you will receive a confirmation email. If you are a new student, you will be asked to activate your myULiège portal using your student number "s" and to create your "@doct.uliege.be" email address.

► Are you also a ULiège staff member?

Please note that if you are also a "ULiège staff member", you will have two separate portals:

- your staff portal (login "u...")
- your student portal (identifier "s...")

You must consult both, they do not merge at registration! Your doctoral and registration information can be found on the student portal.

► Pay the registration fee

The total registration fee is €835 for the first registration. You will have to pay the 50€ deposit by 31 October at the latest. The balance must be paid by 1 February. Everything is done online via your student portal.

If you are eligible for free tuition, please provide us with supporting documents: attestation of ULiège service for my staff members, attestation of scholarship... to be sent to admission.phd@uliege.be.

Re-registration for the doctorate is only possible once your result has been encoded and transmitted to the Enrolment Service by the Faculty.

As soon as the result "Admitted to continue" is communicated to us, we will automatically proceed with your re-registration.

However, you must check via your "student" portal that you have been re-enrolled by 30 September at the latest. If this is not the case, contact us (see contact below).

Also, the re-registration fee of €32.00 must be paid by 31 October.

Doctoral students who do not wish to continue their thesis must notify the Faculty AND the Registration and Admission Office. To notify the Registration and Admission Office, you should send an e-mail to admission.phd@uliege.be via your @doct.uliege.be address.

If you interrupt your PhD before 30 November, the academic year will not be counted in your course.
