To teach in upper secondary school, it is necessary to hold the "agrégation" (teaching degree) of higher education or a Masters in education.

General access conditions to the Upper secondary school teacher degree

With a 2nd cycle diploma earned in the French Community of Belgium

If the diploma is listed in the table of the Decree of the Government of the French Community of 15 June 2007:

  • The student has access to the AESS or corresponding educational orientation as a required title.

If the diploma is not listed in the above mentioned table:

  • Enrolment in an education Masters coming closest to the diploma acquired is recommended in order to earn a required title. => An admissions file may be necessary.
  • Enrolment in an AESS closest to the diploma acquired is possible on the basis of an admissions file, but the title will be considered sufficient.

With a 2nd cycle diploma obtained abroad

Students must apply for the equivalence of their foreign 2nd cycle diploma to the French Community of Belgium (Wallonia-Brussels Federation).

If they obtain an equivalence to a Masters awarded in the French Community:

If the Masters is listed in the above mentioned table:

  • Access to the corresponding AESS as required title (upon review) or admissions to the education orientation (upon review).

If the Masters is not listed in the above mentioned table:

  • Enrolment in an education Masters coming closest to the diploma acquired is recommended in order to earn a required title (upon review).
  • Enrolment in an AESS closest to the diploma acquired is possible on the basis of an admissions file, but the title will be considered sufficient.

If they do not obtain an equivalence for a diploma issued by the French Community

The student must submit an admissions request application for an education Masters. In most cases, this will require two years of study.

With a 2nd cycle diploma obtained in a University College

Students with a 2nd cycle diploma earned in a University College must systematically go through the admissions file process in order to register for the AESS.

There is, however, an exception for those with the following Masters or Bachelors degrees:

  • Translation (-> AESS LLM or LLG)
  • Applied Communication (-> AESS in information and communication)
  • Commercial Science (-> AESS management sciences group)
  • SHU Business Management (-> AESS management sciences group)
  • Commercial Engineer (-> AESS management sciences group)
