To teach in upper secondary education, you need to hold an aggregation (AESS) or a master's degree in didactics.

The AESS completes the2nd cycle diploma (licence or master) acquired in a given discipline, which identifies the subjects that can be taught. The AESS is the teaching qualification required for permanent appointment in upper secondary education.

It is awarded on completion of a 30-credit course specifically designed to train future teachers in the teaching profession. The content of this training is strictly defined by decree and includes theoretical courses and practical internships. The AESS is a professional qualification, but not an academic degree.

Universities in the French Community of Belgium may refuse the registration application of a non-fundable student on the basis of his or her academic record (cf. art. 5 of the decree of 11 April 2014).

This measure applies in particular to students who already have a certain number of registrations in the same course of study (without having obtained a degree).

In addition, students who enrol in a course of study after failing twice in a competitive examination or any test enabling them to undertake or continue higher education in the same course of study are not eligible for funding.
