As a public university open to the world and is anchored in the scientific, cultural and economic development of its region, the University of Liège relies on its three pillars: teaching, research and civic engagement.
ULiège trains responsible citizens who are provided with cutting-edge knowledge and critical thinking, are able to share knowledge and can push forward an increasingly complex world.
Global exposure is a top priority at the University of Liège. The institution offers a wide range of international mobility opportunities to students, researchers and staff, enabling them to enhance their cross-disciplinary skills and language knowledge.
To teach in upper secondary education, you need to hold an aggregation (AESS) or a master's degree in didactics.
The AESS completes the2nd cycle diploma (licence or master) acquired in a given discipline, which identifies the subjects that can be taught. The AESS is the teaching qualification required for permanent appointment in upper secondary education.
It is awarded on completion of a 30-credit course specifically designed to train future teachers in the teaching profession. The content of this training is strictly defined by decree and includes theoretical courses and practical internships. The AESS is a professional qualification, but not an academic degree.
The student has access to the AESS or the corresponding didactic finality as a required qualification.
If the degree is not listed in the table :
Enrolment in a didactic master's degree that is closest to the acquired diploma is recommended in order to obtain a required qualification. You may need to submit an application for admission.
Enrolment in an AESS that is as close as possible to the acquired diploma is possible, on the basis of an admission file, but the title will be deemed sufficient.
With a foreign 2nd cycle degree
Students must apply to the French Community of Belgium (Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles) for equivalence of their foreign 2nd cycle diploma.
If the student obtains an equivalence to a Master's degree awarded in the French Community of Belgium:
If the master's degree is listed in the table of AR.Gt 15-06-2007(table listed in one of the tabs below):
Access to the corresponding AESS as a required qualification (on admission application) or admission to the didactic finality (on admission application).
If the master's degree is not listed in the table :
Enrolment in a didactic master's degree that is closest to the acquired diploma is recommended in order to obtain a required qualification (on admission application).
Enrolment in an AESS that is as close as possible to the acquired diploma is possible, on the basis of an admission application, but the title will be deemed sufficient.
If no equivalence is obtained from a diploma issued in the French Community:
The student must submit an admission application to a didactic master's degree. In most cases, two years of study will be required.
With a 2nd cycle diploma from a higher education school
Students with a 2nd cycle diploma from a higher education school ("Haute Ecole", not university) must systematically submit an admission application to the AESS.
There is, however, an exception for holders of the following master's or bachelor's degrees :
Translation (-> AESS LLM or LLG)
Applied communication (-> AESS in information and communication)
Depending on the courses offered in secondary education and on the education network, the 2nd cycle diploma (Graduate degree) will either be a required title or a title deemed sufficient.
The Decree of the Government of the French Community of 15 June 2007 sets the correspondence of the academic grades of Masters in teaching with the academic grades referred to in the provisions on required titles in education.

Holders of academic degrees found in this table will obtain a required title.
Degrees which are not found there only result in (coupled with teacher training) a title deemed sufficient for teaching. Holders of these diplomas may encounter certain difficulties in appointment within official education.
Indeed, to be appointed to a permanent title in the secondary education organised by the French Community, the teacher must meet two conditions:
Have the qualified title (AESS)
Have a 2nd cycle diploma recognised in the legislation as allowing one to teach subjects determined in higher secondary education.
However, to be appointed to a permanent title in secondary education within the open networks or official networks subsidised by the French Community, the teacher must have:
The title of “agrégé” (AESS) required or judged satisfactory.
The decree of the 11 april 2014 regulates the titles and functions in basic and secondary education in the French Community.
This reform aims to create a uniform regime, all networks combined, of titles allowing for the exercise of the role of teacher. These titles will be classified into required titles (TR-"titre requis"), satisfactory titles (TS-"titres suffisants"), and replacement titles (TP-"titres de pénurie"), the reform guaranteeing in principle the priority of the primary recruitment of a TR (TP) over a TS, of a TS over a TP and a TP over another title or diploma. The need for a teaching title or degree for a career (priority and appointment) in a teaching position is also affirmed as part of this reform.
The titles "requis", "suffisants" and "de pénurie" must be set for each function by the Government while respecting the guidelines provided for in article 16 of the decree.
Students enrolled in at least 120 credits at the end of a master's degree course at an institution in the French Community may simultaneously enroll in studies leading to the title of agrégé de l'enseignement secondaire supérieur (AESS). However, students admitted under this provision cannot be proclaimed until they have obtained the necessary academic master's degree.
Students who have only the dissertation remaining in their 120-credit Master's cycle may simultaneously enroll in the didactic section of the same Master's degree, subject to approval by the Service des Inscriptions et des Admissions.
If a student holds a 120-credit Master's degree for which there is a didactic option, he or she is advised to register for the didactic option rather than the AESS. This will give them a second master's degree and a double diploma (didactic master's and agrégé). This is the qualification required for permanent appointment to higher secondary education.
For holders of a2nd cycle diploma issued by a non-French-speaking institution, a specific French exam for access to the AESS exams must be taken and passed before January. The same applies to didactic studies. Level C1 is required.
Only one AESS can be taken
To find out which AESS to register for, students can visit the CEFEN website.
If you are a student of nationality outside the European Union (with the exception of assimilés, doctoral students, students coming as part of an international codiplomation as well as holders of a CFWB higher diploma), you will be required to pay the sum of €200.00 (administrative costs) in order to finalize your online application. This payment of €200.00, which includes all bank charges, will be used to process your application. If your application is accepted, this sum will be deducted from minerval. In all other cases, the administrative fee will not be reimbursed. It is therefore very important to check that you meet access requirements.
Assimilated students
If you are an assimilated student (assimilation), you are exempt from paying the €200.00 administrative costs for processing your application, provided you can prove this by supplying all documents relating to the assimilation condition selected.
File review
Payment of the €200.00 administrative costs, which includes all bank charges, is a precondition for processing. Before completing the online form, please read the access conditions and check that they have been met. Then consult the list of documents to be provided according to your situation. You can then complete the online form after consulting thewarning and theinstructions.
Warning
We have observed that students, mainly of Cameroonian origin, are being swindled by one or more intermediaries. These intermediaries sometimes produce false documents without the consent of the student concerned. We therefore invite you to file the case yourself.
